westside history

Westside Family Church began as a new mission called Quivira Road Baptist Church (QRBC) in 1976. For the next 12 years, it served the community as a traditional neighborhood church. In 1989, a new senior pastor was called. The church changed its focus to purpose driven in 1996, and fully embraced this new paradigm in 1998. In 1999, the church relocated to western Johnson County and became Westside Family Church. The church adopted a simple, biblical strategy and structure that insures equal emphasis would be given to all five New Testament purposes of the church (worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry and evangelism).

The church implemented eight specific transitions during the past ten years:

  • Approach – from program driven to purpose driven
  • Target – from reaching “fellow Baptists” to reaching the unchurched and disconnected
  • Worship style – from traditional to high energy contemporary
  • Leadership – from a committee / deacon-led church to a staff-led church
  • Ministry – from staff doing the ministry to staff equipping our member-ministers
  • Strategy – from no systematic plan to a Purpose-Driven disciple-development strategy.
  • Worship environments – from one worship service on Sunday to eight services on three campuses
  • LifeGroups – from traditional Sunday School to relational connection groups

These transitions have been greatly effective, and the church has grown most dramatically over the past six years.

Westside remains one of the nation’s fastest growing churches (recently recognized as Outreach Magazine’s 16th fastest growing church in the U. S. in 2007). We are amazed at the continued growth and ministry fruit, and believe that the most exciting days are still ahead. This is your invitation to join us on this remarkable adventure!
